I imagine that it was a cold, January day in Detroit, 1947, when little Eve came into this world. She was the first of four beautiful girls born to Anthony and Helen.

The blond curls of her tow-headed youth faded at some point to the short, brown hair that we always knew.

My Mother's Graduation Photo

So too, her shyness as a girl later gave way to the chatty-with-anyone Mom that sometimes made us, inpatient children, sigh in exasperation in the grocery store line.

Little Me & Mom

Yet she showed us how to love, just by being who she was.

Simply by taking the time to have a friendly conversation with a stranger, or bringing a glass of cool lemonade to a worker in the yard, or giving her freshly, baked goods to the staff at Dentist office, or making her Fluffy Buttermilk Blueberry Pancakes when your friends came over…all her simple acts of love were saying “you are special”. Such a beautiful reflection of God, who provides in so many little and big ways to let us know of His love and care for us.

She made us laugh by making herself laugh.

She would thoughtlessly shake her foot on the bed as she tore through the paperback pages of her library romance novels.

She would tell you all the ingredients, measurements, and instructions to a recipe that you didn’t realize you wanted.

She would say, “Better let you go,” at least three times around the end of a phone conversation before she actually would let you go.

She would have your favorite meal on the table when you came home for a visit.

She spent many evenings playing cards or board games.

She would befriend someone that she just met outside a movie theater.

She loved us incomparably.

As did we.

As you await with bated breath Part 2 of my annual Christmas update, I’m giving you a little something extra. In Louisiana, they call that Lagniappe (lan YAP; and not with the nasal Michigan ‘a’ either).

I love this video, so I had to edit it, then share it. It features my cutie-patootie nephew, Jacob, at 6 months, and my Dad. This was taken right before my wedding, so it was June, at my house. Next week Jacob turns ONE – I can’t believe it has been a year already…

In this rare footage, you will see how we do it in the Sanchez family: We start the love affair with music and dancing young.

Enjoy watching Jacob, breaking it down to Chaka Khan. Choreographed by Grandpa.

“Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.”
Henry Ford

I started a tradition quite a while ago of writing a recap of the year before the new one was to begin. I did start this post before 2012 began, but I just wanted to enjoy visiting with family instead of writing about it. As I begin this post, we currently are more than halfway on our 2 day drive back home to Dallas from Florida, so with the Cowboy’s game on in the background which is occupying my husband in our hotel room, now’s as good a time as any.

2011 was quite a year!! It brought both some of the hardest and greatest times in my life. Here are some of the more memorable moments:

Out of the gate of 2011, in January we had to gather all the courage, strength, and hope that comes through faith. My Mom’s Breast Cancer had come back in her bones with a vengeance. She spent her 64th birthday with her friends and family on January 21st, and then 2 days later departed this world. She still managed to cross some important things off her “Bucket List” first, including seeing me try on my wedding dress from her hospice bed; and Skyping to see her newborn Grandson, Jacob Richard — Paul & Pilar’s youngest boy — born just a few days before her birthday.

1 of about 7 dresses I tried on before I found the one. Mary Catherine was the Angel who brought the dresses from her Ocala shop that day

In February, before returning to Dallas, Mike surprised me and Dad with a short trip to St. Augustine, Florida. That’s a special place for me, and I hadn’t been back for many years. It was a much-needed time away together, and we wanted to pray for all those who had prayed for us during our time of need. We lit candles and prayed for you all when we visited Our Lady of La Leche at the Shrine, and walked the Sacred Acre where the 1st Mass was celebrated in the US.

A short trip to St. Augustine, Florida with 2 of my favorite fellas. Trying to start getting our heads out of the fog...

Meeting my newest nephew, Jacob Richard, upon our return to Dallas. Holding him was what my heart needed...

Then it was back to Dallas, commencing the journey to find a new “normal.” Of course, wedding plans began immediately in high gear, to plan it in just 5 months down where Mike grew up in San Benito, TX and South Padre Island. I do not recommend grieving and destination wedding planning, but it’s just how things ended up… And so we rely on God’s grace, and those He’s given us to do what we need to.

I never even got thank you notes out to all the people who sent flowers, Mass cards, gifts, Edible Fruit displays, sympathy cards, books, and reached out in so many ways. So please know that everything meant so much to us, and we are grateful for your friendship, love, prayers and support – truly.

In March, Mike’s Mom came to Dallas and spent Spring break with us. We had fun crafting and she was our first passenger in the new vehicle that we bought. God blessed us with a fantastic deal on fully loaded red Mercury Mariner, with less than 5,000 miles on it. As hard as it was for Mike to let go of Ol’ Blue, this little crossover has served us well.

Our new Mercury Mariner - we love "Ruby"!

Mike's Mom with baby, Jacob. Can you tell she is ready for more little ones??

In April we went to Hollywood, Florida. I was Alyssa’s, my niece, Sponsor for her Confirmation. We had a great visit with family, and are so proud of the beautiful young lady that Alyssa has become, inside and out.

Cracking up with my niece Alyssa at her Confirmation Party

On the last day of Spring Blooms at the Dallas Arboretum, we had our Engagement photos taken. Our friends John Wehlage, and his wife Julie, did an amazing job on both our Engagement Photos and my Bridal Portraits. More photos (includes the events surrounding our wedding) are posted on our wedding site blog, the Martinez Lounge so I’ll only post a couple here:

Mike + Lisa - Engagement Photos at the Dallas Arboretum during Spring Blooms

Wow, April was really busy. We took a jam-packed wedding planning trip down to South Padre Island. It felt like a contest – how many vendors can we book in one weekend? HA! The last weekend of the month we headed to Eunice, Louisiana where I used to live and work. Our friends hosted a beautiful engagement Mass of Thanksgiving and Party, Cajun style, at Walnut Street’s Atrium of the dear Miller family — where I served at many events for others. Again, more stories and photos are all on our Martinez Lounge site.

Celebrating with my Cajun Family - Cajun dancing with Garrett

Last year it was May Showers, Bridal Showers that is. A beautiful shower was hosted on Mother’s Day (aren’t my friends amazing??) by friends & CRHP (Christ Renews His Parish) sisters. The other was graciously hosted by St. Ann’s choir members after a Wednesday night practice. My Bachelorette Party was hosted by my Maid of Honor, Kelli, at my friend’s, Cynthia, home in Coppell. We also attended Engaged encounter, along with our NFP classes. My oldest nephew, Daniel, graduated from High School. My Dad came to stay with us before the wedding, and so we began the big move of Mike into the Condo – and it was the three of us in close quarters until the wedding. Wedding planning pretty much consumed all the other moments – LOL. Lots of photos of those great moments on our blog. I’ll leave you with a few.

Bridal Shower with friends & CRHP Sisters

My husband rocks. A spontaneous surprise, we left his folk’s South Texas home on Monday, where we spent our first Martinez Christmas, to show up at my Dad’s. My brother, Jeff’s, family joined in and met us here late last night.

Here’s the video of that great moment where 7 of us descended upon Dad’s quiet home.

It was special, as this was also the 1st Christmas without our dear Mom; and Dad’s first one home alone. How sweet that we could see both our families for Christmas!

This was the old bed that I inherited. A Full Size spring mattress that had seen better days. Not a good fit for us Newlyweds, with bodies experiencing various aches and pains. Bad beds and bad backs are not a good mix.

We went shopping yesterday and received the blessing of a great deal on a Tempurpedic King Sized Bed and Base from Sleep Experts. The bed we chose is called the Rhapsody, with a “deeper comfort layer of highly-conforming TEMPUR-HD material fully cushions your body and delivers a medium-firm feel.” It was delivered earlier today and I confess, it already has induced a power nap and an ever-increasing desire to get to bed early.

The Open Window: A new firm. back-supporting Tempur-Pedic bed. A King-sized bed, it will allow room for growth, aka. Kiddos in God's time

Landing some other great deals that we scoured the discount shops for, we got the rest of what our new bed required: A hypo-allergenic, waterproof mattress protector; a 7-piece King Bed Spread Set; and the new Sateen 600 thread count 6-piece Sheet Set. All that for around $100, I’d say that we did really good.

Lining up the other portion in the sound sleep procurement equation, Mike is now installing the Blackout Roman Shades that we previously bought from Lowes. Not only will they help block out the light from the parking outside our Condo’s bedroom windows, but dang, they look good! Small touches really can provide that extra finish and tie in other elements in the room.

The Blackout Roman Shade vs. the Roller Shade - no contest in style and function!

I believe that we are now set to meditate for our 9-hour Novenas to St. Mattress, tee hee! Good night…

Finding healthy AND delicious dishes can be a lot like looking for comfortable AND stylish shoes: They are out there, you just have to search a lot to find the right “fit”. When you do achieve dual perfection, that’s when you tell all your girlfriends and then use it until it’s plumb worn out. Consider this my call to tell you, “Eureka! I found a smart and sassy dish!”

I found this recipe on one of my favorite sites for healthier recipes, Cooking Light. That site takes most of the difficulty out of the search, as nearly everything that I’ve tried on there has been a winner. I was looking for an appetizer type dish that I could make for what has become the Martinez Lounge Happy Hour (i.e. drinks & snacks at home, after work, for us Newlyweds.) On Friday, Mike, Kelli & I pigged out on this Black Bean Hummus with warm slices of Flax, Oat Bran & Whole Wheat Flour Pita Bread and Cucumber. Today I took it into work, and you know it’s a hit when a man will come back into the break room about 4 times to get more. I served it today with pita chips and raw Sugar Snap Peas, yum!

BLACK BEANHUMMUS w/ PITA

Ingredients

1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro, divided

2 tablespoons tahini (roasted sesame seed paste)

2 tablespoons water

2 tablespoons fresh lime juice

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

3/4 teaspoon ground cumin

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 (15-ounce) can no-salt-added black beans, rinsed and drained

1 garlic clove, peeled

1/2 small jalapeño pepper, seeded

3 (6-inch) pitas

Preparation

1. Preheat oven to 425°.

2. Place 1/4 cup cilantro, tahini, and next 8 ingredients (through jalapeño) in a food processor; process until smooth. Spoon into a bowl; sprinkle with remaining 1/4 cup cilantro.

3. Cut each pita into 8 wedges. Arrange on a baking sheet. Bake at 425° for 6 minutes, turning once.

If you are a visual learner or culinarily challenged, here’s there’s a link to the video on how to prepare this fantastic dish!

How to Make Black Bean Hummus

If you have trouble finding Tahini, the Sesame Paste, look around the Mediterranean section of the grocery store (I found it around some Jewish staples, like Matzo). I asked 5 people in Walmart (yes, I know, why???) where it was; sadly, 4 people were standing within 15 feet of it in the same row and had no idea this crucial ingredient of Hummus was in their midst.

I hope you’ll enjoy this Hummus with a Hispanic Twist!

It’s been a nice day here in a cooler version of DFW. We took advantage of the holiday by beginning to put things up on the walls in our home office. Here’s what the progress is looking like in my corner of the home office, aka the Martinez Command Center:

My crafted French Twill Cork Storyboards that were featured in my post yesterday are hanging now, ready to fill up with writing notes. Near the window is the beautiful personalized frame that my sister-in-law & crew gave us for our wedding — it has our names and our wedding date on it, and happens to match perfectly! (It’s blank because it is waiting for our wedding photos to pop in there.) The Paris sign was a house-warming gift from 4 years ago. My crafted letter holder is sitting on the desk along with some of our framed engagement photos, some photo boxes holding supplies, a few personal items, a little pot for my push pins, and some cool tins from Ikea that I put my pens and things in. Uhhh, don’t pay any attention to the stuff on the floor…still needing to finish setting up and cleaning up

A close up of the 3 French Twill Cork Storyboards that I made and are now hanging on the bright yellow home office wall. My excitement inspired the message that I push-pinned up there: ”I (heart) my home office!”

Mike’s desk received a decorative touch as well. Artwork that I made in high school, my pen & ink stipple point Bulldog, “Poncho” now serves as his watchdog.

It was about 9:30 pm when Mike and I realized we were hungry, since we had been so embroiled in our set-up. We took our fruit, cheese and cracker snack/dinner into our upgraded space to enjoy.

Mike gets a big “THANK YOU!” He helped me attach picture hangers, ran out to Home Depot amidst the set-up to pick up more supplies, carefully measured everything off, drilled, etc, etc, and made it look “picture perfect.” He’s so handy, and I’m so blessed.

Looking forward to continuing to set-up the Martinez Command Center. We have some more work to do, but thankfully the bigger items are pretty much in place. I hope you have enjoyed a brief glimpse into some of the space, my French Countryside corner office, in the Newlywed’s home!

We, the Newlyweds, have been settling into married life with a skosh more then two months under our Sacramental belts now. Part of process has consisted of setting up our home office, which has been exciting for me since I never have had a “real” set-up before. It has been a gradual and detail-oriented undertaking over the past few weeks now, from shopping extensively online then finally going to Ikea for corner desks we both like to assemble and arrange, to making the bigger investment of a portable AC unit to keep our hottest room cool enough to house all of our computers/gadgets/systems and keep them running. And what the heck? Finding office chairs that are less expensive then a Lazy Boy recliner and chair mats for high pile carpets that are less expensive then replacing the carpet has been an ordeal in and of itself!

But now I’ve gotten to the fun part — the decorative bit! And to put my own sassy twist on my creative space, I’ve done some crafting. I’ve had some supplies on hand, picked-up whatever was lacking, and finally have made some time to devote to getting it ready to transform my space!

I picked up an old cork board at the Good Will that someone had already attempted to make sassy. I saw more potential in that polka-dotted bulletin board so I put down my $5 and snatched it up. I stripped it down and started to rebuild it into a French Country Cork Story Board!

I’ve had scraps of the French Twill fabric since a friend brought me them shortly after I moved in 4 years ago. That designer friend helped me plot out a “French Countryside” theme in my bright yellow at-the-time guest room. We used some of those material scraps as accents to the valance hanging over the windows. After all this time, the remaining scraps have worked out to be the perfect sizes for the pieces featured herein.

I began my crafting with the large Bulletin Board. I put a little cotton-like backing over the cork, then I hot glued my French Twill material over that. For next time, I will use Fabric Glue instead, because the hot glue bled through the light colored fabric in a few places. Craft and learn, right?

I made a trip to Hobby Lobby and picked up the perfect frilly black ribbon to apply to the wood border. The black created a dramatic frame for this piece. I then hot glued a decorative cream accent border around the interior edge to finish it off. I like the soft touch and detail right inside that frilly dramatic edge.

Now I have my fancy French Twill Cork Storyboard to use for my writing projects! (Photographed above, bottom right.)

To have a bit more space to push-pin up my storyboard index cards to organize my writing topics, I also got some cork board 12×12 squares. Back at Hobby Lobby, I snagged 2 gorgeous and appropriately named “Paris” open back frames that were 50% off (nice frames – originally $27.99 each). I cut down the cork squares to fit the 8 x 10 frames. I covered it with the French Twill fabric, and used craft glue to stick it on to the cork board. Then I hot glued them into the frame.

Next I cut some black foam board to fit as a backing behind the cork. It was not only meant to give it a more finished look, but also to provide some support since the cork is thin and flimsy. These pieces were quick to make, relatively inexpensive with the sale purchase, and will make nice side accents to the middle large cork storyboard.

Lastly I needed something to organize my bills and other paper paraphernalia. I got a simple little wooden black tiered letter holder – I think it ended up being $6.99 with my 40% coupon. I took some of my black frill ribbon, and the cream accent border down the middle, and attached the accents to the front with my craft glue. Fast and simple touches have made it go from plain to posh.

There’s something to be said to creating a pleasing environment in which to work. If I’m going to spend a considerable amount of time at my desk, I wanted a warm, sassy yet classy, with a touch of international flair workspace in which to be productive, creative, or both. My husband can have his Superman stuff on his side, but I can almost smell the fresh baguettes and Café au lait in my Hungry-Mexican twist on the French Countryside.

I need to go out to get some picture hanger thingies (that is a highly technical term, sorry if I lost you there) to complete my crafted sassy supplies by making them wall-hanger ready. That’s on the agenda for later today or tomorrow. Once they are up on the wall tomorrow and the space gets tidied up, I’ll post a pic of what my sassy office space looks like.

I hope that this may have inspired you to beautify your space too! Just like me, make it your own. If you’re not crafty, or just don’t have the time etc, just say the word and that may be the last incentive I need to set-up an Etsy shop with my Mother-in-laws lovely Crocheted items and this and whatever creative and/or sassy endeavors my brain squeezes out! Actually, by mid-October I’d like to have the Etsy shop up and running since my MIL is a crocheting machine, and we’ve had some of her items ready to go since her Spring Break visit (Hey, we were wedding planning, OK?). So more to come!

I could talk about it, or I could paint about it. So paint I did…

Indeed, this was a stretching exercise for me. I’ve drawn using various mediums since I was a kid, but painting has been a virtually untouched medium for me. I was discovering the seemingly limitless world of Acrylics mostly as I went. Thankfully I was blessed to have the support and supplies of loved ones.

The Catholic Foundation has done a competition for Artists for the past 6 years. This time I actually found out that I hadn’t missed the deadline about a week or two out. So I started to toss around ideas of subject matter. Should I go edgy – do an urban jungle? What is appealing to those who will be judging? Then it came to me…for centuries Artists have been expressing their emotions in their work. This could be used not only as an opportunity to express some of my grief, but also to pay tribute to my beautiful Mom.

The painting is entitled “Cloud Dancers.” It was inspired by my Mom’s love for Angels (she has left us a huge collection of them) as well as her love of dancing. I always loved watching her and my Dad dance- to think of it still makes me smile – how they glided almost over the top of the floor, embracing each other, in the rhythm of the song, smiling…

To finalize my composition, I took my sketch book to St. Catherine’s adoration chapel 5 days before the deadline, and I asked Mom and the Holy Spirit to guide me. How do you look now? How do you want to be represented? I kept coming back to Degas’ dancers, and various pictures of angels and dancers.

I picture her now running across the clouds, using her legs like they had never not worked. She is in her prime, experiencing more joy then my heart could know this side of heaven.

Here are a few notes from moi, the Artist:

My Mom is the yellow figure in the middle – such a bright and joy-filled Spirit.

Mike’s brother, Tony, who passed away in his early 20′s is on the left. His pointed finger leads us upwards to the Father.

And on the right, is my beautiful Grandma, Luisa Sanchez. She was such an example to me, and many, of unfaltering love.

It’s amazing how a piece of art can not only reveal what is in our hearts, but can also help us to also get in touch with what it is feeling. So even if my painting is not selected and my Mom doesn’t dance on a mural in the Dallas Art’s District, nothing is lost. I have pushed past where I was: In my art, in my expression of self, as well as where I was in my emotional life.

This painting gives a message to her too. ”I love you Mom. Keep dancing on the clouds for me until we meet and dance together again…”

Shuffling through some of my stowed away things while doing some project work, I rediscovered this gem. This postcard purchase dates back to 1997, the spring I spent in the Austria study-abroad program, whilst out happily galavanting around the other side of the world.

St. Teresa of Avila was a Carmelite Nun of the 16th century Spain. In her early years little T showed a real backbone for the Faith from as early as 5-years-old [hit up that link for more on her story.] Then she put her folks through some real typical teenage rebellion years. Take heart, Dads who think that sending your daughter away to a Convent will solve everything: In this case, it not only worked but also cranked out an amazing Saint!

It looks like I now have a powerful new intercessor that meshes well with me, as she is the Patroness of not only headache sufferers (I’ve suffered with Migraines since Junior High School), but also Spanish Catholic Writers. I wonder if she would adopt a Hungry-Mexican writer? Hmm, worth praying for a shot at least…

Reflecting on this, it really is an exquisite prayer. Simple yet profound; full of hope; directing all things back to total trust in Our Father God. I would expect nothing less then this from one of the three female Doctors of the Church. This card shows the prayer written in St. Teresa’s own handwriting. You may have noticed it’s in Spanish as well, which makes sense since she was born in the province of Avila in Spain.

Take this prayer with you into your day. May it help you rise above the challenges you may face, the unkind words that may be spoken to you, the busy coldness of the world rushing around you, the things weighing on your mind… In short, may it lift you up to the God who loves you.

The translation is as follows:

Let nothing disturb you,

Let nothing frighten you,

All things pass away:

God never changes.

Patience obtains all things.

He who has God

Finds he lacks nothing;

God alone suffices.

-St. Teresa of Avila
